Hesti Setyowati is a Partner of the Dispute Resolution Practice Group of Lubis Santosa & Maramis. She graduated from Faculty of Law University of Indonesia (Sarjana Hukum) in 2004, and earned her LL.M degree from the Faculty of Law Leiden University, the Netherlands, in 2007. During her studies, Hesti Setyowati was honored with the Outstanding Student Award by the Faculty of Law University of Indonesia (2003). She was also awarded several scholarships for academic excellence and community development, namely the Djarum Scholarship (2001 and 2002), STUNED Scholarship (2006) and the KOICA Grant for ITLOS Internship Program (2007). Aside her academic activities, Hesti Setyowati served as the Chairman of the Indonesian Student Association for International Studies (2003-2005) and Chairman of the student’s organization for press, film and photography (Pers, Film dan Fotografi Mahasiswa, FHUI) (2001-2002).
Before joining the firm in 2004, Hesti Setyowati interned at the Department of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia and Masyarakat Pemantau Peradilan Indonesia (Society of Indonesian Judiciary Monitoring), and subsequently worked at Pusat Studi Hukum dan Kebijakan Indonesia (The Centre for Study of Law and Policy, Indonesia). Throughout this period, she has been actively engaged in the law enforcement activities, which, among others, are the Alternative Law Reform and the Law Summit III. She was also interned at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) in 2007, which where she benefited the experience in assisting the Tribunal in the 88th Hoshinmaru Case and the 53rd Tomimaru Case (both Japan v. Russian Federation), concerning Prompt Release of the Vessels.
Hesti Setyowati joined the Dispute Resolution Practice Group of the firm in 2004. She focuses his practice in civil and commercial, arbitration, administrative law and unfair business practices litigations. She was a member of the Firm’s legal team assigned in representing Morgan Stanley & Co. Incorporated and Credit Suisse, in the tort claim brought by PT Indah Kiat Pulp & Paper and PT Lontar Papyrus Pulp & Paper (both are subsidiary of Asia Pulp & Paper Company (APPC)) before the Bengkalis District Court and Kuala Tungkal District Court; STT Communication Ltd and Indonesia Communication Ltd in the defence of a citizen lawsuit and a class action lawsuit filed at the Central Jakarta District Court; and Exxon Mobil Indonesia Incorporation, in the defense of citizen lawsuit filed at the Central Jakarta District Court concerning the appointment of operator of Cepu Block, Indonesia. In the administrative law litigation, she represented PT Tambang Batubara Bukit Asam (Persero) Tbk., a state owned coal mining company, in the proceeding before the District Administrative Court of Palembang, South Sumatra with regard to the cancellation of the exploitation mining right of PT Tambang Batubara Bukit Asam (Persero) Tbk by the local administration. She is also the firm’s team member assigned in several cases of unfair business practice case at the Commission for the Supervision of Business Competition of the Republic of Indonesia (Komisi Pengawas Persaingan Usaha) and subsequently at the District Court, in representing Goldman Sachs Singapore Pte. Ltd. with regards to the sale of 2 (two) Very Large Crude Carrier of PT Pertamina (a state owned petroleum company, PT Semen Gresik (Persero) Tbk., with respect to its distribution issues, and Temasek Holdings (Private) Limited in the allegation of monopolistic practices relating to the shareholding of two Indonesian major telecommunication services provider.
Hesti Setyowati is a member of the Indonesian Bar Association (PERADI) and the International Bar Association (IBA). She speaks Bahasa Indonesia and English.
